Meet the Digital Champions

These are our awesome Student Digital Champions at the University of Derby.

Name: Adrian Perdenia. Where are you from? Poland. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? I attended Art-profiled secondary school in Poland doing fine arts and graphic design. I also volunteered on technology-related events. When did you start? 2015. What are you studying? BA Graphic Design. Why did you choose to be a digital champion? Technology always felt natural for me so I decided to share my knowledge and experience with others to help them achieve higher results with less effort and to help them develop a passion for new things.

Name: Cristina Simion. Where are you from? Romania. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? For the first 18 years of my life I lived in Turnu Magurele, a small town in the South of Romania, just a few kilometers away from Danube, the Bulgarian border. Then I got into University in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, so I moved there for one year. After a while I decided I am not enjoying the subject as much as I thought. When did you start? 2014. What are you studying? Journalism. Why did you choose to be a digital champion? For me, the Digital Champion role represents an opportunity to enhance my skills as it is a very practical role which requests very technical people. As I was always intrigued by technology and also because of my course. I am very intrigued by any role that can give me the opportunity to practice my technical skills as well as develop new ones in an effort and to help develop a passion for new things.

Name: Jacqui Fowler. Where are you from? Croydon, but have been native to Derby for 20 years. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? I joined Rolls-Royce in their computing department as a mainframe programmer. I am a lifelong technophile and have worked across many areas of technology, all over world. When did you start? 2014. What are you studying? Psychology, and hope to do my Masters in Health Psychology with a special interest in health behaviours of adolescents. Why did you choose to be a digital champion? I have always been a strong advocate for technology awareness and capability and want to encourage people to be brave, use, explore and exploit the amazing range of new technologies that surround us today.
Name: Chinwenwa Veronica Osanakpo. Where are you from? Nigeria. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? I studied my undergraduate degree at Nottingham Trent University in Business Management and Economics. When did you start? 2016. What are you studying? MA Education – Leadership And Management. Why did you choose to be a digital champion? I wanted to be a digital champion because the world is becoming more technologically inclined and I’d really love to sharpen my skills so that I can secure myself a good job in the future. Also, I am currently studying on the MA Education course and technology has been used a lot more in education recently so honestly, I’m just really looking to soak in as much as I can to better myself and whatever organisation I work with.

Name: Credence Shumba. Where are you from? Zimbabwe. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? I was in my first year at National University of Science and Technology (Zimbabwe) studying Applied Mathematics. When did you start? 2016. What are you studying? Foundation Degree in Computing. Why did you choose to be a digital champion? I wanted to be a digital champion because I believe being technologically literate gives an individual liberty when working or studying. I believe if more digital technology users who are well informed and equipped come together the future is ready for us.

Name: Victoria Betteridge. Where are you from? Brierley Hill, West Midlands. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? Worked as a supervisor at an Independent Financial Advisors. When did you start? 2015. What are you studying? BSc Human Biology. Why did you choose to be a digital champion? I personally find using online tools a great way to learn, and I like the idea of being able to help others use these tools in an effective way to aid with their degree.

Name: Hannah Bottrill. Where are you from? Lichfield, Midlands. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? Before attending university I went to Chase Terrace Technology College 6th form, studying IT, ART and Business Studies. When did you start? 2015. What are you studying? BSc Marketing (Digital). Why did you choose to be a digital champion? As a Marketing Digital Student, not only can contribute with my Digital Knowledge. I want to learn more about the University, meet new people studying other subjects, as well as to help developers create successful learning material for students.

Name: Diana Stone. Where are you from? Burton on Trent. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? I was studying, writing and performing music as well as working in marketing. When did you start? 2016. What are you studying? Music Technology. Why did you choose to be a digital champion? I wanted to further develop my digital skills in marketing and heard that one of the projects was to develop a website for a student Music Record Label. Having heard about the new label, I knew I wanted to be a part of the project.

Name: Craig Western. Where are you from? Derby. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? Before University I worked in various retail and customer service related job roles, this was always interesting and different as every day I was communicating with new people but I wanted to make a career from my interests and studying Digital Media and Marketing at the university of Derby has given me that opportunity. When did you start? 2015. What are you studying? I am currently in my second year studying Digital Media and Marketing. Why did you choose to be a digital champion? I became a digital media champion because digital and social media is something I have always been interested in. Marketing (digital) is a brand new course at the University of Derby so I jumped at the chance to join this course. While studying this course my tutor told me about a great opportunity to join your team.

Name: James Naughton. Where are you from? Frimley, Surrey. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? After completing my A-Levels in 2015 (Film, Theatre and English Literature) I took a year out to work. During this year I did various professional acting jobs, alongside teaching in a youth theatre, as well as working as a team leader within a pub. When did you start? 2016. What are you studying? I am currently in my first year of Contemporary Theatre and Performance. Why did you choose to be a digital champion? I have always had an interest in technology and becoming a digital champion seemed a very good way to utilise the skills I already possess as well as develop new ones. I’m also quite a strong advocate for technology enhancing learning and the possible uses of different forms of media within teaching and learning literacy.

Name: Eryk Gadomski. Where are you from? Poland. What did you do before coming to the University of Derby? I attended Magnus Church of England Sixth Form in Newark-on-Trent. There I studied my A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology. When did you start? 2016. What are you studying? BSc Biology. Why did you choose to be a digital champion? I am fascinated at how rapidly technology has evolved and is evolving right now. I want to pioneer and increase the use of digital literacy at the university, to improve student use and access of technology. By doing this, it will enhance the skill set of students and benefit them in future employment. I believe that technology has its uses in all degrees and that it is essential for everyone to be technology literate at the university.
